Putin Threatens Seizure of European Ships Over Vessel Captures

Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened on August 12, 2026, to seize European ships in retaliation for the capture and potential sale of Russian commercial vessels.

Speaking aboard the missile cruiser Varyag during Pacific Fleet war games off Sakhalin Island, Putin described Western actions as piracy and robbery and stated Russia would respond in kind. He indicated that any retaliatory seizures could occur wherever we ourselves consider it necessary and appropriate, not necessarily in the same waters where Russian ships are targeted.

Putin's warning follows European Union actions to detain vessels suspected of being part of Russia's shadow fleet and new sanctions allowing the sale of seized cargo. Admiral Viktor Liina, commander of the Pacific Fleet, reported to Putin that naval personnel are prepared to inspect and detain vessels from unfriendly states. Liina also noted that many commercial ships operated by European carriers fly flags of convenience, effectively making them a shadow fleet.

Russia is believed to be using hundreds of ships to evade international sanctions imposed after its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The EU's sanctions package allows member states to confiscate and sell Russian oil and other cargo from these vessels. Putin's remarks were made as tensions remain high in the Asia-Pacific region, with upcoming joint US-South Korean war games.
