The Story
Spain's King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia visited Melilla on Wednesday, following their visit to Ceuta on Tuesday.
He also declared that all illegal migrants in Spanish territory must return to their country of origin as soon as possible. This marks the first royal visit to Ceuta and Melilla since 2007. The visit follows an unprecedented surge on July 30-31, when more than 70,000 migrants streamed into Ceuta. King Felipe pledged the Spanish state would not leave Ceuta's 80,000 residents alone or defenceless and called for good faith in relations with Morocco, emphasizing mutual respect. The royal couple also paid tribute at a cemetery to migrants who died attempting to reach Ceuta.
