NYC Mayor Mamdani Implements Tax, Reviews NYPD, Condemns Gaza Actions
The Story
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's new pied-à-terre tax targets wealthy out-of-towners. Mamdani, the city's first Muslim mayor, also directed the New York Police Department (NYPD) to conduct a comprehensive review of its use-of-force policies and practices, the first in a decade.
He announced reforms aimed at strengthening civilian oversight, including new procedures to prevent officers from retiring before facing disciplinary proceedings. Mamdani issued a statement on the third anniversary of October 7, 2023, calling it a day of mourning and condemning Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza. He cited 74,000 Palestinian deaths, including 21,000 children, and called for an end to the US government's complicity with arms shipments.
This statement drew criticism from conservative pundits, Zionist organizations, and some within the Palestine movement. Mamdani previously demanded President Trump end all ICE operations in the city after a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot an immigrant in northern Manhattan.
