Canada is set to announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following failed trade talks last week.

Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and three other Cabinet ministers are expected to unveil Canada's response. US President Donald Trump's new 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods took effect on Saturday, August 22, 2026, after negotiations broke down on Friday. Canada's retaliatory tariffs are effective from September 8. On Monday, August 24, 2026, President Trump threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on Canadian automobiles, car parts, and steel starting January 1, 2027.

Trump accused Canada of ripping off the United States of America for years and stated, "Canada will be treated like a State no longer!" The current US tariff on non-US content in Canadian autos is 25%, while imported Canadian steel already faces a 50% duty. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the earlier proposed agreement a bad deal, stating that Americans wanted to destroy our major industries, including autos, steel and aluminum.

Carney vowed to retaliate dollar-for-dollar against the new US tariffs, targeting US steel and dairy industries, agricultural equipment, paper, and electronics. He also said Canada could not accept a proposed trade deal that would have weakened French language protections. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer blamed Canada for the collapse, stating, they wanted more in the final hours of negotiations.

Carney accused the US of proposing last-minute changes that were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal. Trade attorney Barry Appleton said the US tariffs amount to a tax on US consumers. The new 50% levy applies to about 5% of Canada's exports to the US. Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to cut off America's access to electricity and critical minerals, but Trump dismissed this as bluster.
