Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted what he described as his personal phone number on Sunday, August 23, 2026, inviting Israelis to contact him.

The number's WhatsApp account was blocked within minutes due to a flood of responses. Kan political correspondent Michael Shemesh questioned if the number belonged to Netanyahu and suggested it was designed to harvest voter data. Netanyahu claimed on Monday, August 24, 2026, that Iran tried to murder one of his sons. Netanyahu argued that security protection is not a luxury, discussing security arrangements for political rival Gadi Eisenkot.

Israeli media reported the alleged Iranian plot had been known to Israel’s security establishment for several months and was subject to a military gag order. Channel 12 reported the attempt occurred while Yair Netanyahu was outside Israel. In July, Israel’s Ministerial Committee for Shin Bet Affairs approved extended security protection for Netanyahu’s wife, Sara, and sons Yair and Avner.

Shin Bet Director David Zini recommended these arrangements despite opposition from National Security Council officials. Netanyahu's coalition is trailing in opinion polls two months before an October 27 general election, with polls showing Eisenkot competing closely with or overtaking Netanyahu's Likud party. The claim highlights heightened tensions since the US-Israeli war on Iran began in February, which saw the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran's mission at the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to the accusation. US President Donald Trump also claimed Tehran tried to kill him before the February 28 strikes.
