CJP Leaders Dipke, Ranka, Das Released After Delhi Airport Detention
The Story
Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das were released from detention on Sunday by a special court's order.
They were released on the condition of no breach of peace for one year and after signing a surety bond of ₹50,000. The trio was placed under preventive arrest by Delhi Police on Saturday. They were detained from an Air India flight shortly after it landed in Delhi from Mumbai. Co-passengers reportedly booed them. The detention occurred ahead of a planned CJP protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Delhi Police invoked Sections 126 (security for keeping peace) and 170 (arrest to prevent commission of cognizable offenses) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) against the leaders. Police confirmed that all due legal procedures were followed. The CJP and opposition parties are demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of voter rolls.
On Saturday, Delhi saw an unprecedented security clampdown, with over 7,000 protesters detained and 45 Metro stations shut down to prevent large-scale demonstrations. Several opposition leaders, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan, and Manik Sarkar, were also detained. Dipke's paternal grandmother, Savitribai Dipke, died on Saturday at the family's ancestral home in Santuk Pimpri village in Maharashtra.
CJP co-convener Ashutosh Ranka accused authorities of insensitivity when Dipke was informed. Delhi Police stated the information was promptly conveyed to him with due sensitivity and offered assistance for travel, which Dipke reportedly declined. Upon his detention, Dipke released a pre-recorded video naming Ajinkya Shinde as the next leader of the protests.
