Kremlin Praises US-Russia Diesel Deal Amid Bipartisan Criticism
The Story
Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev said the US-Russia diesel deal can pave the way for further economic cooperation between the two countries.
President Donald Trump announced last Friday that he and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin reached an agreement for Russia to release diesel supplies to US and global markets. Trump lifted some US sanctions that he himself had imposed against Russia for this deal. The agreement drew strong criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European officials.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the deal a very risky choice that runs counter to efforts to force Putin to negotiate peace with Ukraine. A bipartisan group of 12 US senators urged Trump to abandon the deal, arguing it will betray Ukraine and have a negligible impact on fuel prices. They claimed proceeds would fund Russia's military operations and advance its security cooperation with China, Iran, and North Korea.
Trump defended the agreement, stating "ALWAYS, AMERICA FIRST!" on Truth Social. He also suggested it is time for Ukraine to get a new president after Zelenskiy criticized him for easing sanctions.
