Incoming Democratic Senators Vow to Oppose Chuck Schumer for Leadership
The Story
Incoming Democratic senators and progressive organizers are mounting a challenge against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as the party prepares to take control of both chambers of Congress in January.
Newly elected lawmakers including Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan, Troy Jackson of Maine, Adam Hamilton of Kansas, and Annie Andrews of South Carolina have declined to support Schumer for majority leader or stated they will back someone else. Critics argue the party requires generational change and fresh leadership to deliver an agenda against President Donald Trump.
Schumer defended his position by asserting he retains the votes needed within his caucus to remain leader, while President Donald Trump stated in the Oval Office that Schumer probably secures the position. Meanwhile, Schumer vowed that Senate Democrats will block any right-winger President Trump attempts to appoint to the Supreme Court if a vacancy occurs during the next two years.
