UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron held their first official talks on Thursday at Downing Street, where Macron hailed the very special relationship between their countries.

Macron stated on X that their partnership is more important than ever concerning "Defence, energy, support for Ukraine and European security." Burnham highlighted collaboration with France to reduce small boat crossings, noting that the number of French officers deployed for this purpose would increase to nearly 1,050. The UK recorded its lowest number of summer small boat arrivals since 2020, though Burnham cautioned that smuggling networks continue to adapt tactics.

The meeting followed a Wednesday evening preview of the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum in London, which Macron and Burnham attended alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla. King Charles called the tapestry's unprecedented loan a precious symbol of trust, while Macron remarked that the two countries are as close as the threads in the artwork.

Burnham described the tapestry's return as a landmark moment. The 70-meter-long tapestry, depicting events leading to the 1066 Norman Conquest, is on temporary loan from France, marking its first time on British soil since its 11th-century creation. The exhibition opens to the public on September 10 for a 10-month period, with tickets sold out through the end of 2026.

Professor Michael Lewis, Curator of The Bayeux Tapestry, stated that the arrow stitching in the scene depicting Harold II's death was certainly added later, questioning if it was ever there in the first place. In other royal news, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq for a state visit at Windsor Castle from October 20 to 22. The Bank of Canada is also set to unveil a new $20 bill featuring King Charles, marking his first appearance on Canadian paper currency.
