Osaka, Eala, Zverev Advance at US Open; Auger-Aliassime Falls

Naomi Osaka advanced to the third round of the US Open 2026 on Thursday, defeating Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.

Osaka, the 13th seed and a two-time US Open winner, showcased her fashion sense, wearing a Thom Browne overcoat for her second-round match and a custom Who Decides War gown inspired by Allen Iverson for her first-round match. Alex Eala, 21, also reached the third round, her deepest run in New York, after beating Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-1, 6-4.

Eala, the 17th seed, is ranked No. 18 in the world, the highest for a Southeast Asian in WTA history, and will face No. 14 seed Iva Jovic on Saturday, September 5. Top-seeded Alexander Zverev secured his third-round berth with a five-set victory over Quentin Halys, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-7 (3/7), 6-3, in a match lasting four hours and 33 minutes.

Meanwhile, men's third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was eliminated, falling 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to 50th-ranked Russian Karen Khachanov, citing dizziness and seeing spots. Sixth-seeded Alex de Minaur and 13th-seeded Lorenzo Musetti also exited the tournament. Former women's champions Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, and reigning Grand Slam champions Elena Rybakina and Mirra Andreeva also booked third-round spots.

The tournament has accredited about 100 influencers, leading to discussions on tennis etiquette, including an incident during Osaka's first-round match where a photo shoot with a portable ring light led to an umpire's reprimand.
