French AI firm Mistral unveiled a new open-source AI model, Mistral Large 4, nicknamed "Le Chonk," which it claims rivals the strongest Chinese open-weight models and can challenge the best AI models globally.

The 1 trillion-parameter model is available in preview, with a final version expected by the end of the month. Mistral co-founder and chief scientist Guillaume Lample stated that Le Chonk is optimized for coding, cyberdefense, manufacturing, finance, and electrical engineering. He also said it is the most capable open-weight model developed outside of China and very, very close to some proprietary models.

US-based Reflection AI, backed by Nvidia, also launched its first model, Beam, which it says is adept at coding and agentic tasks. Both Reflection and Mistral stated their new models surpass other open Western models, including those from Thinking Machines and Nvidia. Reflection CEO Misha Laskin aims to serve heavily regulated industries and governments that cannot or will not use Chinese models.

Mistral VP of Science Pierre Stock noted that increased model availability can improve defenses and allow researchers to audit technology. The release of these open-weight models comes as businesses face challenges in budgeting for AI, with the number of tokens a task consumes being difficult to predict. Open-weight models are cheaper to run than closed models, costing only as much as the compute they consume.

Mistral claims Le Chonk will reduce the performance gap with leading proprietary models and offer a competitive alternative to Chinese releases. The company states it trained its model from scratch, unlike Chinese labs accused by the US government of abusing distillation.
