US Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a speech from the Pnyx in Athens on October 7, calling for Western nations to return to their civilizational roots and restore democratic principles and values.

Speaking with the Acropolis in the background, Rubio argued that modern Western societies have allowed qualities like fierce individuality, relentless ambition, and a yearning for discovery to erode. He stated that the ideal of many ideologies today has become a world of perfect safety, devoid of risk or failure. Rubio asserted that the United States chooses the unapologetic pursuit of national power under President Trump.

Rubio's remarks were delivered before approximately 250 invited guests, including senior Greek government officials, diplomatic corps members, and representatives from business, education, and culture. The speech expanded on themes Rubio presented at the Munich Security Conference in February, where he warned Europe faced civilizational erasure. He traced the development of the West from ancient Greece through Rome, European Christianity, and the United States, citing figures like Alexander the Great, Caesar, Charlemagne, and Columbus.

Earlier on October 7, Rubio met with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis to discuss deepening economic, energy, and security cooperation. Rubio praised Greece as a strong and model NATO ally and a source of stability in an unstable world. He announced that the US and Greece are launching a new counterterrorism information-sharing program. Gerapetritis stated Greece is prepared to provide naval assistance to the United States in the Strait of Hormuz if circumstances allow and a viable peace process is in place.

Greece is already contributing to international maritime operations in the Red Sea, Mediterranean, and Indian Ocean, including Operation Aspides and Operation Atalanta. Rubio is visiting three European NATO allies, starting in Iceland and concluding with talks in Lisbon, Portugal.
