Apple Unveils HomeView Smart Display, Challenges Amazon and Google
The Story
Apple has joined the smart display market with the £299 HomeView, which works with its newly AI-powered Siri virtual assistant.
The device, announced on Tuesday, features a seven-inch square screen mounted on a domed aluminum speaker base. HomeView will go on sale in the United States on November 13 for $299. Apple says HomeView is intended to function as a central control point for connected household devices. Its built-in camera recognizes registered users and adapts the display accordingly for up to six household members with their own messages, calendars, and reminders.
The device can also handle FaceTime video calls, music and video playback, and serve as a digital photo frame when idle. HomeView relies mainly on hands-free voice commands and uses facial recognition to provide a personalized software experience. At the heart of the device is Siri AI, Apple’s revamped voice assistant powered by Apple Intelligence.
Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest and Home devices currently dominate the smart speaker and smart display market. Apple aims to strengthen its presence in the smart home market, an area where it has historically struggled to match competitors.
