Alberta Separatists Rally Ahead of Referendum; Prime Minister Carney Warns Against
The Story
Alberta separatists rallied at the provincial legislature in Edmonton on Saturday, ahead of Monday's referendum vote.
Roughly 1,100 people gathered at the rally, organized by Let Alberta Decide, a pro-independence group. Albertans will vote on Monday on whether to remain in Canada or have a second, binding separation referendum, marking the first time the province has put secession to a vote. More than a million residents have already voted by mail or at advance polls.
A new Ipsos poll conducted for Global News shows seven in 10 Albertans plan to vote to remain in Canada, while support for beginning the legal process of holding a binding referendum on separation increased three percentage points to 23 percent. Prime Minister Mark Carney made a final appeal to Albertans on Friday, warning that a referendum is a dangerous gamble and a dangerous bluff. First Nations in Alberta and across North America stand opposed to separation.
