Oregon School Shooting Survivor Recovers; Armed Father Confronted Gunman
The Story
A 7-year-old girl, Saylor Graham, is recovering from surgery after being shot in the face during Thursday's deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.
The shooting on October 15 left three children and a teacher dead. Saylor, who uses a wheelchair and has a rare genetic condition called CASK, was stabilized in serious condition. A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $380,000 for her family's medical care and expenses. Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter and father of two students at the school, confronted the teenage gunman.
Giamanco, who had a.40-caliber pistol legally stored in his vehicle, entered the school, heard shots, and fired his gun after seeing a teacher fighting with the shooter. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said Giamanco shot the murderer multiple times, ending the threat before the first deputy arrived. President Donald Trump praised Giamanco, stating, "It's a terrible thing, but thank goodness for a man that had a gun and knew how to use it."
Giamanco's family members said he wants no recognition and feels guilty he could not save more lives. An unnamed teacher tackled the shooter, Griffin John, in the special education classroom, throwing her cell phone at him. The 16-year-old gunman, Griffin John, blasted children and a teacher with a shotgun, firing at least 15 shots loaded with birdshot, buckshot, and slugs.
A passerby in a red truck saw Griffin John II with a gun on school grounds, yelled at him, and called 911 after John aimed and shot at the truck. Cases of armed civilians ending active attacks are rare; out of 634 incidents tracked from 2000-2025, 29 ended when armed civilians shot the attacker.
