Violent protests across France on Saturday led to the incineration of the historic Limoges Town Hall, with police admitting they lost control as more than 1,200 demonstrators were arrested nationwide.

The 143-year-old Limoges Town Hall, built in 1883, was largely lost after masked protesters set it ablaze, and its clock tower collapsed as flames engulfed the roof. Local prefect Maurice Barate called the extensive damage a heritage catastrophe, stating the roof collapsed onto lower floors, sparing only the west wing, and two-thirds of the exterior disappeared.

Barate said a wild horde had deliberately set fire to the town hall. Limoges prosecutor Emilie Abrantes reported more than 15 arrests in connection with the fire and riots in Limoges. The protests, involving an estimated 550,000 people nationwide, were over the cost of living, education standards, and Emmanuel Macron's government. Hundreds of shops were looted in major cities including Paris, Marseille, Nice, Nantes, Bordeaux, Limoges, Lille, Toulouse, and Strasbourg.

In Lyon, the city's tourist office was burnt out, and central Lyon was left with debris and shattered shop windows. In Marseille, protesters forced their way into the town hall, overturned a bust of Marianne, and damaged furniture. Four police officers sustained more serious injuries in Limoges, and four police vehicles were destroyed. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said the government would not be intimidated by violence and blamed the unrest on the ultra-left and criminals.

President Emmanuel Macron vowed to prosecute and punish those who performed such attacks. The destruction of Limoges Town Hall revived memories of the collapse of Notre Dame cathedral's spire in a 2019 fire; the building had survived both world wars and played a role in the French Resistance.
