Pentagon Creates Office of Religious Affairs Reporting Directly to Secretary Hegseth
The Story
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced the establishment of a new Office of Religious Affairs (ORA) at the Pentagon, which will report directly to him.
Hegseth made the announcement during his "State of the Force" address on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. The ORA's head will serve as the secretary and deputy secretary's chief adviser on religious affairs, with guaranteed budgets for chaplaincy and infrastructure like base chapels. The office is tasked with aligning religious-affairs policy, overseeing the Armed Forces Chaplains Board, representing the department to civilian religious endorsing organizations, and sponsoring research and tools to support and assess spiritual fitness, spiritual readiness, and spiritual resilience.
Hegseth argued that the military had previously prioritized political correctness and secular humanism over religion, with secular careerists in cubicles and lawyers running around with red tape overseeing service members' spiritual lives instead of military chaplains. He also stated his desire for no fatties, no trannies, no beardos, no weirdos, no wimps, no radicals in the armed services.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) announced plans to launch a probe into the new office, seeking transparency into its funding, operations, and plans to assess troops' spiritual fitness through Freedom of Information Act requests. The FFRF also seeks records on ties to outside religious groups and concerns regarding atheist, humanist, and other nonreligious service members and potential First Amendment issues.
Hegseth, who uses the moniker secretary of war, also announced plans to cut the number of spots reserved for admirals and generals by 20%, doubling the 10% reduction he ordered last year.
