Poland Deploys Forces to Kaliningrad Border After Intelligence Warnings
The Story
Poland launched a large-scale security operation along its border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, deploying additional police, counterterrorism units, and elite GROM special forces.
The operation, running from Monday until at least November 8, was established after Polish and allied intelligence agencies warned of possible sabotage operations and armed border incursions during the first half of November. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated Tuesday that suspicious movements involving individuals with flashlights were observed near the border shortly after midnight, and that quick mobilization by security forces successfully prevented an attempted act of diversion or provocation.
A special command center was set up at national police headquarters in Warsaw, with preventive measures concentrated in the northeastern regions of Warmia-Masuria and Podlaskie. National police chief Marek Boroń confirmed the deployment of officers from several provinces to protect residents and critical infrastructure, while denying that the mobilization was connected to a domestic political dispute involving the Constitutional Tribunal.
