Amazon Pauses Operations With 21 Air After Miami Cargo Plane Crash
The Story
Amazon has temporarily suspended business with 21 Air, the cargo carrier whose Boeing 767 freighter overran the runway at Miami International Airport on September 6, killing five people and injuring others.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated that the company is pausing operations with 21 Air while supporting the investigation and reviewing safety protocols. The decision to pause operations will have little impact on customers, as Amazon expects to rely on existing staff or other carriers like ABX Air and Air Transport International. The Greensboro, North Carolina-based 21 Air had been flying for Amazon since mid-2024 and operated seven 767-300s for the retailer.
A former Amazon logistics executive suggested that replacing the lift provided by 21 Air could be difficult by peak shipping season in late October. The aircraft, Flight 7598, was loaded with Amazon packages when it overshot the runway by approximately 1,300 feet and struck two vehicles. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
