Carney Pitches Canada to Global Investors Amid Trade War
The Story
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is pitching Canada as a safe harbour for global investors amid geopolitical and economic uncertainty and an escalating trade war with the United States.
Carney aims to attract over 100 global investors and sovereign wealth fund representatives, representing more than C$120 trillion in assets, to invest in sectors such as defense, energy, mining, AI, and infrastructure. Canada is seeking to expand economic partnerships with Europe, Asia, and the Middle East to reduce reliance on the U.S. Carney announced plans to privatize operations for four of Canada's largest airports, which he said would raise billions for reinvestment in transport infrastructure.
The goal is to make Canada the most attractive place in the G7 to invest. Many business leaders received personal invitations from Carney, who has a background in global finance and central banking. The investment summit in Toronto includes panels with CEOs from Deutsche Bank, Bombardier, BlackRock, and Blackstone.
