Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi condemned the alleged killing of a woman in Okinawa by a US Marine, calling it a heinous crime and demanding tougher discipline and prevention measures.

The incident has reignited public anger and protests over the long-standing American military presence on the island. Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of strangling Anna Yagi, 39, at a hotel in Naha and stealing her wallet and backpack. Security footage reportedly showed Ballard entering the hotel with Yagi and later leaving alone with what appeared to be her belongings, though Ballard denies the accusations.

Prime Minister Takaichi urged Washington to fully cooperate with the investigation. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi summoned US Ambassador George Glass, and Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi separately summoned US Forces Japan commander Lt. Gen. Stephen Jost to lodge protests. Defense Minister Koizumi is scheduled to meet with Okinawa Governor Genta Koja on Wednesday to discuss the arrest and prevention measures.

The US embassy in Japan extended sincere condolences and confirmed US officials are cooperating with Japanese authorities. The Third Marine Expeditionary Force stated the Marine Corps takes these allegations very seriously. Approximately 160 people rallied in Naha, condemning the killing and renewing calls for the removal of US bases from Okinawa.
