At least 139 migrants, including 15 children, have died after a boat carrying 305 people capsized off the coast of Djibouti.

Around 84 people remain missing. The vessel was traveling from Djibouti to Yemen when it sank on Thursday night or Friday morning, October 8-9. More than 80 people survived, all of whom are Ethiopian nationals. Alexandre Coissac, IOM Chief of Mission in Djibouti, stated that the bodies buried by authorities in Djibouti are included in the official count, but others buried by migrants will not be added until verified.

He described the burials as occurring in a common grave, like in a war situation. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that the boat was overcrowded and sank shortly after departing. Survivors are receiving medical and psychological support at the IOM rescue center in Obock. The shipwreck is one of the deadliest on the route from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula, where migrants seek work in Gulf nations. Personal items, including shoes, were found on a beach near the incident site. Djiboutian authorities are continuing search and rescue operations.
