Nigel Farage Faces Count Binface in Clacton By-Election

Nigel Farage, leader of the anti-immigration party Reform UK, is facing off against comedian Count Binface in a special election for his Parliament seat in Clacton on Thursday.

Farage cast his vote in the Essex seaside constituency. He triggered the vote last month when he quit his seat, hoping to quell questions about his finances and secure a resounding victory in a people versus the establishment contest. The major political parties boycotted the by-election, dismissing it as a stunt. This decision left Farage facing more than 30 rivals, including Count Binface, a political satirist who poses as a comic space alien wearing a trash can on his head.

Other candidates include Howling Laud Hope of The Official Monster Raving Loony Party and Marcus White from the Everyone is God Party. In total, a record 34 candidates are standing, resulting in the longest ballot paper in British political history, measuring 90cm long. This has caused logistical problems for Tendring District Council, requiring larger tables at the count and the result announced on the floor of Clacton Leisure Centre.

Farage was being investigated by a parliamentary watchdog over a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency tycoon Christopher Harborne, which he received before he won his Clacton seat in 2024. Lawmakers must declare donations received in the year before an election within a month of taking office. The investigation was suspended when Farage resigned on July 7 but is expected to resume if he re-enters parliament.

Farage has repeatedly denied an obligation to disclose the donation, stating it was a personal gift. He won 46% of the vote in Clacton in 2024 on a turnout of 58%. Clacton, once a popular holiday destination, is now a fading seaside town that includes Jaywick, rated as the nation's most deprived neighborhood. While Farage is widely expected to win the race, questions about the millions of pounds in donations he received will persist.
