Sweden's conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced his resignation on Thursday after the left-leaning opposition narrowly won the country's general election.

The vote count ended Thursday, confirming that the bloc of center-left parties secured a three-seat majority in the 349-seat parliament. The winning alliance is led by Magdalena Andersson's Social Democrats and includes the Left Party, Greens, and Centre Party. Senior politicians for the far-right Sweden Democrats reacted to their party's poor election result by blaming immigrant voters and newly naturalized Swedish citizens.

Tobias Andersson, a Sweden Democrats MP, specifically blamed the defeat on "200,000+" foreigners who had become Swedish citizens since the government took office in October 2022. Mattias Karlsson, the Sweden Democrats' international secretary, complained that the left-wing opposition received a 97.6 percent vote share in Rosengård, an area of Malmö with a high immigrant population.

Fredrik Kärrholm, a Moderate Party MP, made similar points, describing the Rosengård vote result as one that might have made Saddam Hussein jealous. Social Democrats' leader Magdalena Andersson called the claim a conspiracy theory, arguing similar claims could be made about other demographic groups. Laborious negotiations are expected to form a new government.
