The death toll from floods in Istanbul has risen to five, with several others reported missing, following heavy rainfall that began on October 14.

Bianet reported the updated death toll on October 16. Earlier, Daily Sabah reported four deaths, including worker Faik Şentürk, who died at a school construction site in Beykoz district after falling into a water-filled pit. AKIPRESS, Agence France-Presse, and Al-Monitor had reported three deaths, while News24 and The Star (Kenya) cited two. Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi stated that 2,727 people cut off by floodwaters were evacuated.

Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum reported 48 landslides and 53 retaining walls collapsed across 39 districts. Istanbul recorded 186 millimeters of rainfall per square meter in 24 hours, with a cumulative 273 millimeters, described as the heaviest rainfall in 83 years by the governor's office, though other sources cited 80 or 45 years.

The severe rains disrupted air travel, diverting 43 planes from Istanbul Airport. Classes in schools were canceled for Friday, October 16, and Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced investigations into the circumstances, including potential negligence. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue on October 16 and 17, raising concerns about renewed flooding. Damage assessments are underway, with 300 businesses and 200 vehicles identified as damaged in Ayazağa district alone.
