Ethiopia Names Interim Tigray Government, Aims for Six-Month Polls

The Story
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the installation of an interim government in the northern Tigray region on October 16.
The caretaker administration is mandated to govern for six months, with the goal of creating a stable political climate for free and transparent elections within that timeframe. The move follows renewed fighting between a rebel alliance, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), and federal troops, which reignited a war that killed hundreds of thousands between 2020-22.
Ethiopian forces and a pro-government militia have made advances, taking control of large parts of Tigray, including the regional capital Mekelle, after the TPLF launched an offensive last month.
