Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial Jury Deadlocked, Judge Orders Continued Deliberations

Jurors in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial informed Judge William Sullivan on Tuesday morning that they cannot reach an unanimous verdict.

This marks the fourth day of deliberations in the case. Judge Sullivan instructed the jury to continue their deliberations. The jury had met for less than an hour on Tuesday before sending a note to the judge just after 10 a.m. The jury consists of nine women and three men and has deliberated for about 18 hours since receiving the case last Thursday in Plymouth Superior Court.

On Friday, the panel requested to see Clancy's prescription pill bottles and the knife she used in her suicide attempt, which were exhibits in the case. Lindsay Clancy, 36, has admitted killing her three children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan, in their Duxbury home on January 24, 2023. She then slashed her wrists and neck and jumped from a second-story window in a suicide attempt, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder, asserting an insanity defense. The central question for the jury is whether Clancy should be held criminally responsible for her actions. Her defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, argues she was not criminally responsible due to being overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors contend Clancy planned the killings and knew right from wrong when she strangled the children.

The prosecution noted Clancy had mapped the distance and time for her husband's errands, and she killed her children after he left, citing this as evidence of premeditation. One psychiatrist testified that Clancy's claim of experiencing postpartum psychosis only during the 18-minute window of the killings was inconsistent with the condition. If the jury remains deadlocked, Judge Sullivan will meet with attorneys and then read the "Tuey-Rodriguez" instructions, a last resort in Massachusetts to encourage a verdict.
