The Scottish National Party demanded that the United Kingdom government implement an emergency plan to assist households facing soaring energy bills and living costs this winter.

Westminster Leader Dave Doogan urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to take action following a Bank of England decision to increase interest rates to 4 percent and forecast inflation to reach approximately 5 percent next year. Energy analyst Martin Lewis projected that winter energy bills could rise in January, with price caps anticipated to reach roughly £2,219, representing a 28.8 percent increase over the current £1,723 level.

Doogan asserted that the forecasted rates would leave families thousands of pounds worse off and drive energy bills £1,200 higher than levels pledged during the general election campaign. In response to broader economic pressures, Prime Minister Burnham stated ahead of an upcoming European Union summit that forging closer diplomatic and trade ties with continental neighbors, including removing red tape on food and drink imports, will help lower household expenses and supermarket prices.
