Tesla to Cease Cybertruck Production in Texas by Mid-2027
The Story
Tesla will wind down production of the Cybertruck at its Texas gigafactory around mid-2027 to shift resources toward expanding manufacturing of the Cybercab robotaxi, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk announced on social media.
Musk stated that the company will introduce an extra production shift to clear a backlog of customer orders before dismantling the vehicle assembly line in June or July of next year. The stainless steel pickup truck began reaching customers in late 2023 following a 2019 unveiling, but faced persistent commercial challenges and lower sales than anticipated.
Kelley Blue Book figures indicate U.S. sales declined to approximately 20,000 vehicles last year from nearly 39,000 in 2024, falling short of Musk's early predictions of 250,000 annual sales. The vehicle experienced multiple recalls and quality concerns, while its unconventional design restricted its availability in overseas markets including Europe.
