NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated Monday that Russian drone strikes near the Ukraine-Poland border would prompt the military alliance to increase its support for Kyiv, calling the Sunday attacks a sign of growing desperation by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Rutte pledged to bolster the 32-nation alliance's defenses along its eastern border. Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that Moscow appears poised to intensify its campaign against Ukraine's borders with European countries. Ukraine is under mounting pressure from Russia's air campaign using ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones. On Sunday, a Russian drone hit a railway locomotive inside Ukraine approximately two kilometers from the Polish border.

Ukraine's railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, stated the target may have been a diplomatic train carrying prominent Western officials, including former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former CIA chief David Petraeus, which had departed the station earlier than scheduled. The train carrying these officials had passed through the station minutes before another passenger train was struck and evacuated.

No one was harmed in the attack. The Kremlin stated it would continue striking targets across the whole of Ukraine, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying, "Our military are fulfilling their tasks on the whole territory of Ukraine. They will continue to do so." The European Union said the strikes were intended to scare Western countries from supporting Ukraine.
