Middlesex County, New Jersey, has filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Phillips 66, Shell, and the American Petroleum Institute, seeking to recover costs associated with climate change impacts.

The lawsuit, filed in a New Jersey state court, alleges that the defendants' decades of climate deception have worsened climate change effects, leading to financial burdens on the community. County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios stated the suit is a necessary step to protect residents from damage caused by extreme weather events and rising costs from natural disasters.

Officials indicated the county is prepared to proceed quickly following an upcoming Supreme Court decision on a similar case. The American Petroleum Institute called the lawsuit baseless and part of a coordinated campaign against an industry that powers everyday life. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments on October 5 in the case of Suncor Energy v.

County Commissioners of Boulder County, which could impact numerous other state-level climate lawsuits. This case centers on whether federal law precludes state-law claims for damages related to interstate and international greenhouse gas emissions.
