Zimbabwean Businessman Wicknell Chivayo, Wife Killed in Helicopter Crash
The Story
Prominent Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were among six people killed in a helicopter crash east of Harare on Wednesday.
The helicopter came down around 5 PM local time near Waddilove Mission in the Marondera district, about 70km east of the capital. State broadcaster ZBC reported the crash, and Chivayo's family spokesman, Herbert Chivayo, confirmed the deaths. Police initially reported six fatalities but later revised the death toll to five. Bad weather is cited as a factor behind the crash.
Chivayo was known for his lavish lifestyle and close ties to Zimbabwe's ruling elite, including President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Kenyan President Ruto mourned Chivayo and his wife, referring to Chivayo as a dear friend. Chivayo was a controversial figure, known for government contracts that helped build his business empire.
