Denmark Deploys Conscripts to Greenland Amid Arctic Security Focus

Danish conscripts have been deployed to Greenland for the first time, with military personnel sent to Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq Air Base.

This increased presence by the Danish military aims to accustom troops to Greenland’s Arctic terrain. Approximately 100 conscripts from the Schleswig Foot Regiment will spend about a month training in Greenland, marking the first group in Denmark’s new 11-month conscription program launched in February 2026. Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus stated in June that their tasks do not require longer specialized training.

The deployment occurs amid past threats by President Donald Trump to annex the territory. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is visiting Greenland for two days, starting Sunday, to reaffirm the European Union's support for the Danish autonomous territory. She is scheduled to sign a joint declaration between the EU and Greenland on Monday.

Marc Jacobsen, a researcher at the Royal Danish Defence College, noted Greenland's increasing importance to the EU as an Arctic gateway, due to its geopolitical location, critical raw materials, and role in Arctic security. The EU previously vowed massive investment in Greenland in January to step up Arctic security. Brussels has proposed doubling direct EU aid to Greenland to 530 million euros ($616 million) under the bloc's 2028, 2034 budget.

The Financial Times reported von der Leyen is expected to propose an additional 200 million euros in support during her visit. Her visit coincides with NATO's Arctic Shield military exercise, involving soldiers from 10 countries. Mikaa Blugeon-Mered, a geopolitics researcher at the University of Quebec, called the timing a not insignificant coincidence. The Trump administration had repeatedly accused Denmark of neglecting Greenland and Arctic security, leading Copenhagen and NATO to reinvest in the region, with NATO launching its Arctic Sentry mission earlier this year. People in Greenland gathered to protest against Donald Trump's announcement in January.
