Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy Receives Hospital Care After Suffering Weekend Stroke
The Story
Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut remains hospitalized at Johns Hopkins Hospital after suffering a stroke on Saturday afternoon.
Murphy's chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, announced in a public statement on Sunday that the 53-year-old lawmaker first noticed numbness developing in his arm while attending his son's hockey game. Emergency responders transferred Murphy to a local medical center, where physicians diagnosed a stroke before moving him to Johns Hopkins for continuous observation and therapy.
Herwitt stated that Murphy is awake, alert, responding favorably to treatment, and expected by medical staff to make a full recovery. First elected to the House of Representatives in 2006 and to the Senate in 2012, Murphy serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee and leads Democratic initiatives regarding federal firearm regulations and immigration policy. Murphy was scheduled to campaign in New Hampshire on Sunday alongside Democratic Senate candidate Representative Chris Pappas ahead of the national midterm elections, in which Murphy is not on the ballot. Murphy's office has not released a timetable for his discharge from the hospital.
