Former special counsel Jack Smith admitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that his team acquired financial information, including banking details, from thousands of Americans who donated to President Donald Trump and Trump-aligned Republican entities.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) stated that whistleblower disclosures revealed Smith's team obtained at least 4,782 checks, some as small as $1, between September 2019 and August 2023. These checks included donors' home addresses, bank accounts, routing numbers, and signatures, acquired as part of the "Arctic Frost" election case against President Trump. Grassley confronted Smith, asserting there was no legitimate basis for what you did.

Smith defended the subpoenas as necessary for a criminal investigation into serious crimes. During the same hearing, Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) attempted to accuse Smith of perjury by claiming Smith was in Atlanta on February 3, 2024, to watch an NBA Atlanta Hawks game, suggesting coordination with Fulton County Prosecutor Fani Willis. Smith corrected Schmitt, stating he recalled attending a University of Maryland basketball game where Caitlin Clark was playing around that time, with the Marshal Service present.

Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) noted the likely confusion between the Atlanta Hawks and the Iowa Hawkeyes. A video of Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) looking visibly stunned during the exchange circulated on social media. Schmitt accused Smith of being a total dirtbag and later doubled down on his questioning. Smith defended his investigations into President Trump's alleged mishandling of classified materials, 2020 election challenges, and the January 6, 2021, incident, stating he would not allow politics to influence his work. These cases were abandoned after Trump's 2024 election win.
