Former American Idol Contestant Caleb Flynn Convicted of Wife's Murder
The Story
Caleb Flynn, 40, a former music pastor and "American Idol" contestant, was found guilty on Tuesday of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, in their Ohio home in February.
A Miami County, Ohio, jury deliberated for just over two hours before convicting him on nine counts, including aggravated murder, murder, two counts of felony murder, two counts of felonious assault, and three counts of tampering with evidence. Legal experts indicate that Alleigha Botner, Flynn’s 24-year-old former mistress, will likely not face criminal charges despite her testimony admitting to deleting text messages, lying to the FBI, and expressing a wish for Ashley Flynn's death.
Botner stated she received no promises from the prosecutor in exchange for her testimony. Prosecutors argued that Flynn fatally shot Ashley twice in the back of the head while she slept, then staged a break-in at their Tipp City home on February 16. Flynn had called 911, claiming an intruder had shot his wife. FBI agents testified that there were no pry marks outside the garage door, and gouges on the door frame were made from the inside, dismantling Flynn's account.
The motive presented was his 18-month affair with Botner, who was a church intern. Botner served as a key witness, testifying against Flynn and stating, "I believe that he murdered his wife." Text messages exchanged between Flynn and Botner were presented in court, revealing Flynn's desire for his wife's death, including one message where he responded "Kill her" to Botner's question of "What can I do?"
Flynn also used derogatory terms for his wife in texts. AI-generated love songs Flynn made for Botner were also heard by the jury. Flynn sobbed as the verdict was read. His sentencing is scheduled for October 5.
