The Story
California state Sen. Aisha Wahab won a special election Thursday, August 2026, to complete former Rep. Eric Swalwell's term, becoming the first Afghan American elected to Congress. Wahab, a progressive Democrat, defeated Bay Area Rapid Transit Director Melissa Hernandez in California's 14th Congressional District. She secured 53.1% of votes to Hernandez's 46.9% with 95% of ballots tallied. Wahab will serve through January 2027, when Swalwell's term was scheduled to end. Wahab and Hernandez will face each other again in November for a full two-year term. Swalwell resigned from Congress in April 2026 and ended his campaign for California governor after sexual assault and harassment allegations, which he denies. Criminal investigations into the allegations continue; federal agents seized electronic devices from Swalwell and searched his Washington home. Wahab overcame millions of dollars in outside spending against her campaign. AIPAC's super PAC, the United Democracy Project, spent $2.5 million to boost Hernandez and denigrate Wahab. BOLD America, another super PAC funded by AIPAC, also supported Hernandez. Wahab's outside support came from a state labor organization, Rep. Pramila Jayapal's leadership PAC, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC. She stated, "From foster care to Congress, this journey shows the possibility of the American Dream." Wahab has called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a war criminal and opposes sending U.S. money or weapons to Israel at this moment. Hernandez did not answer yes when asked at an April forum if Israel was committing genocide. Once Wahab is sworn in, Democrats will hold 213 seats in the House, while Republicans will hold 218.
