Protesters are blockading Garvaghy Road following a late-night court ruling that allows an Orange Order parade to proceed in Belfast.

Thousands of protesters, including Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald and First Minister Michelle O'Neill, linked arms in the rain to block the parade. The march was scheduled for 8am on Sunday, September 27, 2026, but has not yet gone ahead more than six hours later. A ruling by the Parades Commission permitting the march from Drumcree Church was upheld in an unprecedented late-night sitting of the High Court in Belfast.

This followed a temporary injunction passed by Justice Patricia Smyth on Saturday, September 26, 2026, against the Parades Commission decision. The High Court's senior judge ruled after midnight that courts had no power to overturn the commission's independent judgment. The Drumcree parade, associated with violent clashes during the Troubles, has been banned since 1998. This would be the first time in nearly 30 years the Orange Order has been allowed to march this predominately nationalist route in Portadown.

DUP leader Gavin Robinson stated Orange Order members would show steadfast determination and patience for another 28 hours, if it takes another 28 days. The parade remains stalled, and it is unclear when or if it will proceed today or in the coming days.
