Rory McIlroy Takes Two Stroke Penalty During Abu Dhabi Championship
The Story
Rory McIlroy received a two-stroke penalty during the opening round of the Abu Dhabi Championship after being penalized for improving his lie on the 12th hole.
The penalty increased his round score from a 68 to a 70, changing a double-bogey six into a quadruple-bogey eight. Video footage showed a piece of grass remaining depressed after McIlroy placed his club behind the ball as it rolled back downhill. McIlroy stated he did not intend to gain an advantage and accepted the penalty to avoid public perception that he had gained an unfair advantage.
He trails tournament leader Francesco Laporta, who opened with a round of 62, by eight shots. Jon Rahm, Sam Bairstow, and Bernd Wiesberger trail the lead by seven shots.
