North Korea performed its first underwater-launched missile tests in nearly three years on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Thursday that the military tested two types of strategic cruise missiles in the country’s eastern waters. KCNA stated the tests aimed to assess the readiness of North Korea’s underwater combat systems and demonstrate the reliability of its nuclear deterrent. Photos from KCNA suggested the "Hero Kim Kun Ok" submarine, unveiled in 2023, was mobilized for the launch.

The tests come as North Korea is increasing weapons demonstrations to pressure the United States for concessions on resuming diplomacy. China's official Xinhua News Agency reported a ceremony for the launch of the New Yalu River Bridge was held in the morning. Chinese Premier Li Qiang said in a video address that the crossing would become a new landmark symbolizing the two nations' traditional friendship and enhance connectivity and cooperation in border areas.

He stated relations have entered a new stage, embarking on a new chapter. North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song also made a video address. The bridge was initially expected to open in 2014, but North Korea did not complete corresponding work on its side. The opening is expected to boost economic, trade, and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
