Trump Photographed With "Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED" Placard Amid Closure Battle
The Story
President Donald Trump was photographed on Air Force One looking at a placard that appeared to reference the demolition of the Kennedy Center.
Rep. Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat and Kennedy Center board member, notified a federal judge about the image and President Trump's threat that the building will end up being ripped down if he is not properly recognized for his renovation efforts. Beatty asked Judge Christopher Cooper for an emergency hearing in US District Court in Washington, D.C., regarding what she calls the unlawful closure of the Kennedy Center by its board of trustees.
A photographer snapped President Trump inspecting a large printed poster board bearing the center’s name and the word "Demolish" above images of construction equipment. President Trump was with Bill Pulte, the chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Kennedy Center executive director Matt Floca stated in a federal court filing that the current closure of the main building is only temporary, set to last for seven days, and will be reevaluated weekly.
The Department of Justice insists the temporary closure is due to acute risks to public safety resulting from continued structural deterioration. Fencing has gone up around the building, and willow trees surrounding it were recently cut down. Beatty's legal team reported seeing a forklift truck run into and hit the pillars on the building several times.
Judge Christopher Cooper previously ruled that President Trump's name cannot be added to the Kennedy Center without an act of Congress. Congress last year appropriated $257 million for needed renovations.
