Christa Pike, a death row inmate in Tennessee, regained consciousness and is speaking after surviving a failed execution attempt on September 30.

Pike, 50, remained alive despite being given two doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital. She was transferred to a local hospital in critical condition, where she received medical care. Her attorneys reported on Thursday that she is now able to walk with assistance and is eating, also regaining some movement in her arms, which were badly injured during the attempted execution.

Pike was the first woman scheduled for execution in Tennessee in over 200 years and is believed to be the first death row inmate in the US to survive such a procedure. Her lawyers had warned that the execution could fail. For the first few days of her hospitalization, Pike was unconscious and on a ventilator.

Shipp was spared the death penalty as he was not legally an adult at the time. A Tennessee court ordered the state to preserve evidence related to the failed execution. Pike's legal team stated she is dealing with profound psychological trauma from believing she was about to die. Slemmer's mother, who advocated for Pike's execution, called the failed attempt a mess.

The failed execution has reignited debate surrounding the death penalty, with the governor pausing all pending executions through the end of the year in response. Questions remain about Pike's long-term physical and psychological recovery, as well as her legal standing after the failed execution attempt.
