Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on X that the automaker will wind down production of the Cybertruck at its Austin, Texas Gigafactory around the middle of 2027.

Musk stated the production line will be reallocated to support increased manufacturing of the Cybercab, an autonomous two-seat robotaxi engineered without a steering wheel or pedals. Gigafactory Texas represents the sole production facility equipped to manufacture the Cybertruck. The decision curtails a vehicle program unveiled in November 2019, which Musk previously described as the company's best product.

While Musk initially forecasted annual production between 250,000 and 500,000 units, commercial sales lagged behind projections. Kelley Blue Book estimated that Tesla sold 20,237 Cybertrucks in the United States in 2025, representing a 48 percent decline from 38,965 vehicles sold in 2024. Deliveries continued to slide during 2026, with an estimated 11,586 units sold through September, marking a 28 percent drop compared to the same period in 2025.

Cumulative deliveries reached approximately 70,000 units since the pickup's late 2023 commercial launch. Alongside lower demand, the Cybertruck experienced 11 safety recalls monitored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for physical and software repairs. Musk called the model the best vehicle Tesla has ever made and characterized the transition as the end of an era. Company leadership has increasingly shifted corporate resources away from conventional passenger vehicles toward artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous transport networks.
