Kenyan Cult Leader Sentenced to 200 Years for Child Deaths
The Story
A Kenyan court sentenced doomsday cult leader Paul Mackenzie to two hundred years in prison for murdering one hundred ninety children and one adult.
Justice Diana Kavedza issued the sentence at the High Court in Mombasa after convicting Mackenzie and twenty-eight co-defendants, rejecting the prosecution request for the death penalty. The judge ruled that the leader of the Good News International Church bore primary criminal culpability for orchestrating a deadly fasting regime that commanded followers to starve themselves to death to meet Jesus.
Co-defendants sentenced alongside Mackenzie included guards who enforced the fasting orders and gravediggers who concealed mass graves in the Shakahola forest. The cult investigation began in April 2023 when police rescued starving worshippers and subsequently exhumed hundreds of bodies from remote forest graves near the coastal town of Malindi.
