President Donald Trump stated Thursday the U.S. will not order a resumption of military strikes on Iran before the November 3 midterm elections.

Trump announced this in a social media post, adding that his team has been having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran. This declaration follows weeks of Trump threatening a post-midterm election escalation in the seven-month-old war, despite earlier promises of a military campaign lasting a matter of weeks. Negotiations had appeared at a standstill since Trump publicly rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the U.S. met certain conditions.

Iran said last week it received a U.S. counterproposal, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated Thursday he expected Tehran to offer a formal reply within days. The U.S. military has dispatched more resources to the region. U.S. officials said a third aircraft carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, and thousands of troops could arrive by the end of October.

The USS Abraham Lincoln was due to arrive at its home port in San Diego on Thursday after a record-long deployment in support of the Iran war, with reports of crew stress and supply shortages. The USS George Washington relieved the Lincoln in August, and the USS George H.W. Bush, deployed for about six months, pulled into Phuket, Thailand, for a port visit several days ago.

Trump's statement came after he told reporters late Wednesday his administration was considering renewed strikes before the election. Public support for U.S. military action against Iran fell to 31% in an August Reuters/Ipsos poll, down from 37% in March, with 83% expecting a prolonged conflict. Republicans face vulnerability on affordability as they seek to retain control of Congress.
