Judge Blocks Trump Birthright Citizenship Order; Lake Ontario Renamed

U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman in Maryland issued a temporary injunction blocking President Donald Trump's executive action to restrict birthright citizenship.

Judge Boardman stated the 2026 Executive Order is almost certainly unconstitutional and cited the Supreme Court's ruling in "Barbara" that children in the class are citizens. The injunction prohibits the new executive order from applying to children born after February 19, 2025. Trump signed two executive orders in August attempting to strip birthright citizenship from children of alien enemies and mothers who fraudulently requested tourist visas.

This follows a June Supreme Court ruling that struck down Trump's initial birthright citizenship order from his first day in office last year. The 14th Amendment's Citizenship Clause establishes automatic birthright citizenship for persons born in the U.S. and subject to its jurisdiction. White House spokesperson Lauren Bis referred to Boardman as an activist judge.

Google Maps and Apple Maps have updated their platforms to reflect the name "Lake America" for U.S. users. MapQuest, a digital navigation platform, publicly refused to change the name, posting "We're not changing it" on X. MapQuest saw a surge in downloads, reaching the No. 1 overall ranking on the US App Store, with over 1.5 million downloads across Canada and the US combined, according to GM Doug Berger.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found 63 percent of Americans opposed the lake's renaming, with 14 percent supporting it. Oswego Mayor Robert Corradino, a Republican, stated the city's government does not back the executive order, citing confusion and lack of practical benefit. Republicans and Democrats in the Oswego County Legislature moved a resolution rejecting the "Lake America" change, noting historical significance and potential costs.

The White House stated Canada had been a bad neighbor by ripping off their country for years as the reason for the name change. Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) called the name change likely a troll. Trump also suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz to "Trump Strait."
