Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican nominee Mike Rogers in Michigan's US Senate race on Tuesday, becoming the first Muslim elected to the upper chamber of the United States Congress.

El-Sayed, a 42-year-old medical administrator and former public health official, ran on a leftist platform featuring Medicare for All, the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and a full arms embargo on Israel. In the general election, El-Sayed overcame attacks from President Donald Trump and a late campaign crisis when Stevens endorsed his Republican opponent, citing concerns over antisemitic rhetoric.

Following his victory, El-Sayed addressed supporters in Detroit, offering sharp remarks directed at Vice President JD Vance, who is constitutionally obligated to swear him into office in January. El-Sayed's victory coincides with a broader national wave that gave Democrats control of both chambers of Congress. In international reactions, prominent Egyptian figures praised his victory, though state media gave little notice due to his past criticisms of Egypt's government as a military dictatorship funded by US tax dollars.

Prior to the race, El-Sayed earned degrees from the University of Michigan, studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, and received his medical degree from Columbia University.
