Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine sees a window of opportunity for US mediation to end Russia’s war until the end of summer 2027.

Ukraine has drafted a one-page document of ideas with US and European officials, intended for presentation to Moscow. Mr. Zelensky indicated that a ceasefire is the main point of the document, along with a previously discussed US proposal for a free economic zone in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas area, to be administered by a third party.

Russia remains open to settlement talks that reflect current realities, while also aiming to capture the remaining Donbas region amid ongoing conflict. Earlier in August, Mr. Zelensky had mentioned that Ukraine handed proposals to US negotiators for a plan to end the war, without providing further details at that time. US-led peace talks previously fell apart earlier in 2026, as Ukraine refused Russian demands to cede more territory and Washington became increasingly preoccupied with a conflict with Iran.

He also stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to draft 300,000 more troops in his war effort against Ukraine, potentially reaching a total of 500,000 next year.
