U.S. federal agents searched the Washington home of Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar on Monday as part of a criminal investigation.

Omar stated on X that she was ok and called the search an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement, vowing she would not be silenced. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, conducted the search. The Justice Department confirmed that HSI agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant in the Washington, D.C., area in connection with an ongoing federal criminal investigation.

Omar immigrated to the U.S. from Somalia in 1995 at age 12 and became a naturalized citizen in 2000. The search took place three weeks before the November midterm elections, where Omar is seeking re-election. Top Democrats in Congress swiftly condemned the action, raising questions about the timing given longstanding Justice Department protocol to avoid overt investigative steps involving political candidates within 60 days of an election.

House Democratic leaders called the raid deeply disturbing and accused the Trump administration of corrupt weaponization of the federal government against Donald Trump’s adversaries. Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) called the raid insanely corrupt. President Donald Trump and officials in his administration have repeatedly referred to an inquiry into Omar. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin last month cited an ongoing investigation into potential fraud on her family's immigration paperwork, stating, "Something’s going to happen." Vice President J.D. Vance also stated in March that the administration definitely believes Omar committed immigration fraud.
