USS Abraham Lincoln Sailors Report Hardship Amid Extended Deployment

Sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln have reported experiencing deteriorating conditions, including black mold and weight loss due to poor food quality, during an extended deployment that has lasted nearly nine months.

Some sailors have expressed concerns about their mental health, with reports of multiple individuals attempting to jump overboard. The lack of clarity on an end date for the deployment has been cited as a morale issue. CNN's Pamela Brown visited the vessel in early July 2026 and described the situation as something messier than a single narrative, encompassing genuine hardship alongside genuine resilience.

The U.S. Department of Defense has since sent the USS George Washington to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, relieving it from duty. Critics of the Trump administration have highlighted the sailors' reported suffering as a result of the prolonged deployment, which has included over 200 consecutive days at sea without a port visit for approximately 5,000 sailors. One sailor communicated to Brown that the mission, initially a two-week operation, had stretched to seven months with shifting justifications.
